Stop comparing sticker prices on Allen-Bradley PLCs. The cheapest quote will cost you 40-60% more in total ownership costs once you factor in programming time, downtime, and spare parts. I learned this the hard way over 6 years of managing a $350,000 annual automation budget.

I'm the procurement manager at a 200-person manufacturing company. I've audited every vendor invoice since 2018, negotiated with 25+ automation suppliers, and built our cost tracking system from scratch. This isn't a theory post.

Before you assume a PLC CPU is dead, learn how to use a multimeter. (Beginners: check voltage at the input terminals first—it's the cheapest diagnostic you'll ever run.)

Of course, TCO isn't the only factor. If you have in-house engineers who already know a different platform, switching to Allen-Bradley might not make sense. And if you're just replacing a failed module on a legacy line, a used part could be the smart move. The key is to calculate your own numbers.

Prices and software change quickly. As of January 2025, Rockwell's list prices are higher than what distributors quote—so always ask for a quote, not a catalog.
