There Is No One ‘Right’ Allen-Bradley PLC
I coordinate rush orders for industrial controls. In the last year alone, I have helped customers get parts for systems that needed to be running yesterday. And one question always comes up: ‘What is the cheapest Allen-Bradley PLC that will work?’
I understand the instinct. But my first answer is not a model number. It is a question: how much time do you have?
Scenario A: The Line Is Down Now (0–7 Days)
If the machine is down and every hour counts, price drops out of the ranking. You need a PLC that is in stock, known to work, and compatible with your existing program. This is where the Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100 PLC still earns its reputation. It is not the newest platform, and I would verify the firmware and software version, but for many small and medium machines it is a practical emergency replacement.
In March 2024, I had a call at 2 pm. A customer needed a MicroLogix 1100, a power supply enclosure, and a set of micro leads for multimeter. If I remember correctly, the normal delivery window was four or five days. We found the PLC at a regional distributor, paid a $250 rush fee, and had it on a van by 6 pm. The client’s alternative was loss of a full production day.
After I approved the rush fee, I second-guessed the premium. Could we have gotten it cheaper? Probably. But it arrived by 8:30 the next morning, and the line was running before lunch. (Should mention: we also verified firmware compatibility before placing the order.)
When you pay for rush service, you are not buying speed. You are buying certainty. And certainty has a price.
Scenario B: Planned Replacement or Budget Buy (3–10 Weeks)
If you have time, ‘cheapest allen bradley plc’ starts to make sense. I have done this more times than I can count. Compare authorized distributor pricing with independent resellers. Check for spare parts, programming cables, and software licences before you commit.
One caution: avoid gray-market units. A ‘brand new’ Allen-Bradley PLC at 40% below the normal price from an unknown online account is a risk. If it arrives locked or with an unusable firmware revision, your savings disappear in a single hour of an integrator’s time.
I still kick myself for one early purchase from a barely known reseller. If I had called the distributor first, I would have caught the counterfeit logo. At least, that has been my experience with smaller machines.
This is also a good scenario for a used Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100 PLC if you are staying on the RSLogix 500 platform. Many of my customers have kept a spare on the shelf for years. That is the opposite of an emergency purchase, and it is usually a smart decision.
Scenario C: New Build or Plant Expansion (3+ Months)
For new projects, I tend to look past the price of the first unit. Training, future support, expansion capability, and programming environment all matter. The Micro800 family or CompactLogix may be a better fit than a legacy MicroLogix, even if the initial quote is higher.
But I am not going to pretend the cheap option never works. The right question is: what happens when it fails? A planned project has time for that trade-off. A stopped line does not.

Here is the thing: a PLC is rarely the only item on the order. Last fall, we had a unit ready to ship but no micro leads for multimeter in stock. Seven dollars. But the technician needed the leads that same afternoon, and the usual office supply shop does not carry them. Now I keep spares.
Similarly, do not underestimate the lead time for a power supply enclosure. If you are modifying a control panel in a hurry, the enclosure can become the bottleneck. A listed enclosure matters. UL 508A sets out construction and spacing requirements for industrial control panels. A non-rated box might work electrically, but it can create safety and inspection problems later.
Generator Connection Without a Transfer Switch? Don’t.
One phrase that also finds my inbox is ‘how to connect generator to house without transfer switch’. I am not going to provide steps for backfeeding. The answer is: don’t.
The National Electrical Code, Article 702, requires transfer equipment rated for the load. This is not an upsell. A generator that can energize wiring outside the building puts utility workers at risk. A mechanical interlock with a generator inlet box can be a legitimate, code-compliant approach in many areas, and it is still not ‘without’ a deliberate switching arrangement.
That kind of safety cost is exactly the same principle I use for PLC deliveries. If you can avoid a serious risk with a small payment, pay it.
How to Judge Which Scenario You Are In
If you are reading this from the plant floor, use this simple list:
- Is the machine stopped right now? Work in Scenario A. Speed and reliability beat price.
- Can the machine stay down for three to ten weeks? Use Scenario B, and shop carefully.
- Is this a new machine or an expansion? Use Scenario C. Think about total cost over the next five years.
When you are unsure, write down the cost of waiting. If the delay costs more than a rush fee, stop negotiating and place the fastest reliable order you can find.
